Not Your Mother’s Girl Scouts

“An organization with millions of supporters that focuses on family and biblical values has joined the boycott of Girl Scout cookies.

“’The Girl Scouts was once a trusted organization dedicated to character building in young girls and women.  Now, GSUSA is abusing that trust,’ said Judie Brown, president of ALL [American Life League].  ‘Most parents and grandparents remain painfully unaware the GSUSA has introduced so-called ‘family planning’ ideology in its curriculum and promote groups like Planned Parenthood to our daughters and granddaughters.’

“Penny Nance, president Concerned Women for America, said her group encourages women to ‘shop their values.’  ‘The Girl Scouts of America went off track years ago and I turned in my sash in response,’ she said.  ‘Their Alliance with Planned Parenthood and the left is not new.’”  Bob Unruh

MILLIONS MORE ASKED TO ‘JUST SAY NO’ TO GIRL SCOUT COOKIES

Buying ‘serves only to facilitate a very liberal pro-abortion agenda’

Bob Unruh, WorldNetDaily, February 4, 2014

An organization with millions of supporters that focuses on family and biblical values has joined the boycott of Girl Scout cookies.

In a statement on its website, the American Family Association said, “It’s hard to say no to those little girls in the green and brown sashes, but buying Girl Scout cookies serves only to further facilitate a very liberal pro-abortion agenda.”

WND reported the American Life League, the nation’s oldest Catholic pro-life education and advocacy group, recently warned people away from purchasing Girl Scout cookies.

“The Girl Scouts was once a trusted organization dedicated to character building in young girls and women. Now, GSUSA is abusing that trust,” said Judie Brown, president of ALL. “Most parents and grandparents remain painfully unaware the GSUSA has introduced so-called ‘family planning’ ideology in its curriculum and promotes groups like Planned Parenthood to our daughters and granddaughters.”

The American Family Association, with its several million constituents, said that as Girl Scouts USA begins its annual cookie sale, it is asking people “to consider what the organization supports with all that dough.”

AFA has built a reputation for mobilizing constituents to act on its boycotts, and has special divisions called OneMillionMoms.com and others that specifically work to influence corporate America.

It cited a recent report by Christy Volanski for LifeNews.com.

Volanski’s daughters, Sydney and Tess, who are former Girl Scouts, created the website Speak Now Girl Scouts, which documents the links between the scouting group and Planned Parenthood, the biggest abortion provider in the nation. Continue reading

Economics 101

“The thief must no longer steal.  Instead, he must do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need.” Paul, Ephesians 4:28

“Wealth obtained by fraud will dwindle, but whoever earns it through labor will multiply it.”  Proverbs 13:11

“Better a poor man who lives with integrity than a rich man who distorts right and wrong.”  Proverbs 28:6

“In the post-Enron era, MBA programs—Harvard in particular—have come in for some caustic criticism for producing graduates obsessed with making money regardless of the ethical consequences.  To some people, MBA graduates are at the root of all the corporate greed and dishonesty.  In a public-opinion survey about how companies can mend their reputations, one respondent declared, ‘Get rid of the Harvard MBA’s.’”  The Wall Street Journal, September 17, 2003

“The old home truths about how the world works:  If you tax something you get less of it; as a general rule an individual manages his own affairs better than his neighbor can; it’s rude to be bossy; the number of problems that resolve themselves if only you wait long enough is far larger than the number of problems solved by mucking around in them.  And the cure is often worse than the disease.”  Andrew Ferguson

No Statistics, No Mischief

A modest proposal for the new Fed chairman.

BY ANDREW FERGUSONThe Weekly Standard, JAN 27, 2014, VOL. 19, NO. 19
It’s been more than a week now and I’m beginning to suspect she’s not going to call, so here I will offer Janet Yellen the advice I’ve been hoping to give her privately since the Senate confirmed her as the new chairman of the Federal Reserve. My advice is: Think about John Cowperthwaite. By this I mean: Reallythink about
Cowperthwaite in 1967

The name is familiar to economic historians, academics in postcolonial studies, specialists in the tax policy of the Far East, and avid libertarians, but less well known to normal people. Cowperthwaite was a lifelong government bureaucrat who should be lionized by anyone who loathes and fears bureaucracies. In 1945, as a member of His Majesty’s colonial administrative service, he was sent to Hong Kong, which was then (and remained until 1997) a British protectorate. Hong Kong was in bad shape at the end of the war. Things only got worse when hundreds of thousands of refugees streamed in as the Chinese Revolution raged next door.

Cowperthwaite rose through the ranks and became financial secretary of the colony in 1961. For the next 10 years he had near-total control over the economic laws and regulations governing Hong Kong. By the time he left office, in 1971, the number of Hong Kongers in poverty had dropped by two-thirds, average wages had risen 50 percent, and Hong Kong had gone from one of the poorest places on earth to one of the richest. Transgender Confusion

“’Forcing boys and girls to share the same bathroom, locker room and shower facility is in itself bullying,’ said Tim LeFever of Privacy for All Students, a group leading the repeal effort [of California’s AB 1266].” Alejandro Lazo

Law Gives New Options To Transgender Students

Alejandro Lazo, The Wall Street Journal, January 23, 2014, p. A 4

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—School districts in California are grappling with a newly enacted, first-of-its-kind law that spells out rights for those braille-all-gender-bathroom-sign-se-5635_252students who don’t identify as being the gender of their birth.

California’s AB 1266, the first such statewide legislation in the U.S., grants students who identify themselves as transgender the right to choose the sports teams and extracurricular activities—as well as the bathrooms and locker rooms—that correspond to their gender identities. Backers of the measure say transgender children have been subject to bullying in such settings and have thus taken to avoiding using the restroom or participating in athletics.

There are no firm estimates of how many such students might attend California schools, and no guidelines for determining if a youngster should be considered transgender.

Signed by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown last summer and going into effect this month, AB 1266 now faces a repeal effort by opponents, who argue that students of different biological sexes should remain separated. Continue reading
