“If you are going to be a leader, you have to be a reader.” Summit Proverb

“Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.”  Proverbs 23:12

“There is no neutral ground in the universe:  every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan.”  C. S. Lewis

“From now on, ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I shall not put.”  Winston Churchill

“The hypothesis of human-caused global warming is gradually dying a well deserved death, even while congressional and Administration politicians continue to preen that, with more bureaucratic power, they can control the weather—and the Environmental Protection Agency busies itself with shutting down American coal-fired power plants and raising the cost of electricity.  ‘No Need to Panic About Global Warming’ by 16 eminent scientists in The Wall Street Journal, January 27, 2012, p. A15, is further indication of its death.

“Our petition to Congress signed by more than 31,000 Americans with university degrees in physical science, including more than 9,000 PhDs, has played a useful role in its demise.

“Still, I expect that it will be a long time before the reputation of science as a reliable source of the truth about the physical world will be repaired.  Moreover, so long as most scientific work in our academies is paid for directly by tax-funded politicians and most scientific workers in our industries also try to remain politically correct, American science will continue to be victimized by politics. Arthur B. Robinson, Access to Energy, March 2012, p.3

After many years in which evolution was the most contentious issue in science education, climate change is now the battle dujour in school districts across the country.  The fight could heat up further in April, when several national bodies are set to release a draft of new science standards that include detailed instruction on climate change.  The groups preparing the standards include the National Research Council, which is part of the congressionally chartered National Academies.  They are working from a document they drew up last year that says climate change is caused in part by manmade events, such as the burning of fossil fuels.  The documents say rising temperatures could have ‘large consequences’ for the planet.  Most climate experts accept those notions as settled science.  But they are still debated by some scientists, helping to fuel conflicts between parents and teachers.

“When Treena Joi, a teacher at Corte Madera School in Portola Valley, Calif., last year showed her sixth-grade students the global-warming movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’—a documentary in which former Vice President Al Gore issues dire warnings about climate change—the drama quickly spread beyond the classroom.

“The National Center for Science Education, an advocacy group that has defended the teaching of evolution, now has an initiative to support climate-change education.  Like evolution, climate change is ‘settled science,’ said the center’s executive director, Eugenie Scott.  ‘We shouldn’t fight the culture wars in the high school classroom.’

“A conservative think tank, the Heartland Institute, is pursuing a competing effort to develop a K-12 curriculum that questions the idea of manmade global warming, according to David Wojick, a consultant who is designing the plan.

“The new science standards are set to be made final by year end.  They will teach students graduating from eighth grade that human activities are ‘major factors’ in global warming.

“Rose Pugliese, a lawyer in western Colorado who has asked her local school board to prevent teachers from presenting climate change as fact, said schools should encourage students to reach their own conclusions.  Unless we’ve go conclusive evidence one way or another—and I don’t think we’ll have that for hundreds of years—I think both sides should be taught,’ Ms. Pugliese said. ‘Allow the kids to figure it out for themselves.’”  Tennille Tracy, The Wall Street Journal, March 12, 2012, p. A6

Thunderontheright.wordpress.com highly recommends the works of Dr. S. Fred Singer (Princeton PhD in physics) in the area of “global warming,”  “climate change,” “hot weather” etc. etc.  His website is Science & Environmental Policy Project (SEPP).  Being a true scientist he would never use the expression “settled science.” Thunder also recommends the DVD “The Great Global Warming Swindle” that destroys the credibility (facts and logic) of Al Gore’s famous DVD—“The Swindle” is available at Amazon.com …
